Decarbonising Gas

Suiso's Decarbonisation Solution

Suiso has developed a simple, easy to implement system which is designed to remove carbon from the hydrocarbon gases used to generate heat in industrial and commercial applications. Unlike other carbon capture technologies, Suiso’s technology collects carbon from the fuel gas prior to combustion taking place in the boiler, furnace, turbine, generator, etc (i.e.”heat appliance”).

The Suiso System overview:

• You divert your input gas (Natural Gas, LPG, Propane, biogas) to a Suiso unit
• The Suiso system removes carbon from the gas and returns a H2/Input Gas blend to the heat appliance
• The Suiso unit manages the delivery of your required H2/Input Gas blend
• No CO2 is formed
• No flammable or hazardous gas is stored on the user’s site
• No downtime – In the unlikely event of the Suiso system failure, you continue to use your existing gas supply, meaning no disruption to your operations
• The carbon is extracted in the form of easy to handle solid particles and collected by Suiso
• Suiso processes and upgrades the captured Carbon at our site to be used in applications such as water and air treatment

Suiso’s Technology

Suiso’s core technology was developed mid-2010s as part of work undertaken for the US DoE and California Energy Commission. This explored the scope to generate Hydrogen from methane using microwave energy. The founding team acquired this in 2022 and focussed on enhancing the system’s carbon removal capability – e.g. extending its applicability to a broader range of hydrocarbon gases (natural gas, LPG, propane, etc.) and carbon output upgrading.

A key feature of Suiso’s technology is its ability to remove carbon from these gases before combustion takes place in furnaces, boilers, ovens, kilns, etc. This is a more effective and cost-efficient way to reduce CO2 emissions than post combustion carbon capture. The carbon is removed in easy-to-handle solid form which has a number of commercial applications.

The use of a proprietary low cost catalyst in a highly efficient microwave driven reactor, delivers high rates of carbon removal at temperatures well below the 1,000°C typically needed in a pyrolysis process. The formation of a high temperature plasma is not necessary for the Suiso process. The Suiso reactor operates at low pressures which can be “tuned” to meet the required delivery pressure of the user’s heat appliance – making it more energy efficient and intrinsically safer. These factors combine to ensure that Suiso’s design delivers lower operating and capital costs compared to other decarbonisation solutions such as electrification or even electrolytic green hydrogen and post combustion CO2 capture.

Suiso’s technology is compact, and its carbon removal units are capable of being built in shipping container format. These units will initially reduce CO2e emissions from gas fired heat processes by over 1.25 tonnesCO2e/day but will eventually remove up to 5 tonnesCO2e/day.
