Suiso is a developer of a low energy near zero emission microwave-driven methane cracking process for onsite generation of Hydrogen and decarbonisation of gas powered heat processes.
Hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe, is rapidly emerging as a sustainable solution for the decarbonisation of the economy and a key piece of the energy transition picture in UK, Europe and around the world.
The cost and practical issues with generating and distributing Hydrogen has held back its use in most economies. Suiso's technology uses existing electrical, natural/bio gas assets and infrastructure to produce clean low cost hydrogen. By transforming stranded ‘brown’ assets into vital hydrogen infrastructure, Suiso helps reduce CO2 emissions and enables countries throughout the world to meet challenging greenhouse gas emissions targets, quickly and cost effectively.
Suiso’s technology allows its generating units to be positioned anywhere there is a supply of natural/bio gas and electricity. Being located at the point of use eliminates the costly distribution (by truck or pipe) of H2 to the customer – delivering significant cost reductions. This allows it to offer competitively priced H2 for small to medium sized applications in developed and developing countries., including:
It will design, build and supply these generators directly or via licensees to markets throughout the world.
Suiso’s core technology was developed mid-2010s as part of work undertaken for the US DoE and Californian Energy Commission. This explored the scope to generate Hydrogen from methane using microwave energy.
The IP developed in that original and current experimental work, has established a novel microwave driven methane cracking process that does not use expensive catalysts or require the creation high temperature plasma or high-pressure reaction chambers.
A key feature of the Suiso reactor design is its ability to generate hydrogen whilst running at comparatively low pressures and temperatures (against SMR and other forms of methane pyrolysis). Its highly efficient microwave driven reactor, using a proprietary reaction initiator, delivers high methane conversion rates at temperatures well below the 1000degC typically needed in a pyrolysis process. No expensive catalyst is required nor is the formation of plasma necessary for the Suiso process.
Compared to existing H2 production methods, Suiso’s generation process offers
Suiso’s technology is compact, and its generating units are capable of being built in shipping container format. These units will initially generate over 200kgH2/day but will eventually deliver up to 1 tonneH2/day.
Suiso converts natural gas and bio-methane to hydrogen and solid carbon black. Its H2 generators will be capable of producing up 1 tonneH2/day. In circumstances, where the requirement is greater than this, then multiple generating units can be located at the desired location.
Suiso will produce systems which can be specified to deliver H2 with a range of purities – from domestic/combustion applications (e.g. ISO-14687, Hy4Heat, etc.) to vehicle fuelling (e.g. ISO 14687, etc.).
Should there be intermittent demand, a complete Suiso system will have storage as an integral part of its system package which will deliver H2 availability even if the generator is powered down. A key advantage of Suiso's technology is that its low temp, low pressure reactions enables it to offer fast start-up and shut-down times as well as good cyclical performance.
A Suiso generator can operate in any location where it can get a connection to natural gas (or biomethane) and electricty.
A byproduct of Suiso’s H2 generation, is the production of commercial grade zero emission carbon black. It is a ubiquitous specialty chemical which has been manufactured all over the world for thousands of years - but typically in very CO2 emissive processes. Originally used an additive for dyes and inks, it now has a diverse range of applications ranging from tyres to electronics and has a global market that exceeds $12bn or 13.5mtonnes.
When compared to existing methods of carbon black production which are highly CO2 emissive (c.3.3kgCO2/1kgC), Suiso’s carbon black will deliver significant CO2reductions (c.10kgCO2/1lg/H2). This not only allows Suiso's technology to offer "clean" carbon black but when using renewable Biomethane as a feedstock a sustainable resource too.
